Video Poker History

In the 1970s casino game manufacturers started applying video screens to replace reels in slot machines. The invention of video poker machine is attributed to two engineers Logan Pease and Bill Wells and marketed by owner of Fortune Coin, William Redd.

The innovation that Pease and Wells brought was that Video poker introduced an element of player skill to gaming machines for the first time. Players were given the option to make decisions that would affect the game outcome.

The success of the game took the gaming industry by surprise and soon video poker machines were adapted from the original upright machines to bar-top models.

The prototype Draw Poker machine led to multiple variations on the poker theme: Jacks or Better, Jokers Wild, Bonus Poker, Deuces Wild Bonus Poker® Player's Choice PokerTM and dozens more.

In 1998 an inventor names Ernie Moody rolled out a new multi-hand video poker machine called Triple Play Draw Poker. This new game allowed a player to play three hands at once (on a 15-coin max play) by dealing three rows of five cards. The first two rows are dealt face down, and the bottom row is dealt face up. The video poker player then chooses the cards he wants to keep from the bottom hand, and those cards automatically appear in the corresponding spaces in the top two hands. After hitting the Draw button, the player gets three different draws from three different decks. So if a player holds three-of-a-kind from the bottom deck, he/she has three different chances to get four-of-a-kind.

Video poker players loved this new game as when they were dealt a big hand like a Royal Flush they would get three times the payout of the older single-hand video poker games. This video poker game won instant fans amongst video poker players and gave rise to a range of new games with more hands ranging from five simultaneous hands ("Five Play") to one hundred hands ("Hundred Play Poker")
